Both individual Provinces and the Federal Government recently released plans to start easing Covid-19 restrictions in Canada starting this Summer, with further reductions planned for the Fall of 2021, including a return to College and University classes.
- Theresa Tam (Chief Public Health Officer of Canada) said that the distribution of some 25 million vaccine doses has resulted in a “strong and steady decline” in cases, with totals less than half what they were during the peak of the third wave in mid-April.
- She was positive, indicating that “over the past month, things have taken a great turn for the better”.
In Canada, almost 68% of the population above 12 years old has been vaccinated against Covid-19.

On June 2nd, for example, Canada administered close to 345 Thousand vaccines in a single day.
Strict public health measures and a ramped-up vaccination campaign have pushed the national Covid-19 case count to its lowest level in weeks. In much of the country, the pandemic outlook is improving.
With a population of around 34 Million people, Canada has distributed more almost 28 Million of Covid-19 vaccine doses and has already applied almost 24.8 Million doses. Canada is quickly applying second doses.
The speed of Covid-19 vaccination has accelerated very significantly in Canada. For example, several weeks ago Government officials in the Province of Alberta (population of around 4 Million) explained that, while it took 128 days to vaccinate 1 Million people in the province, vaccinating the second Million only took 29 days. And the Covid-19 vaccination rate in Canada has picked up since.
What happens next in Canada?
Provided that certain targets are met, the Federal and provincial governments in Canada are announcing various plans to start easing Covid-19 restrictions as early as June 2021, with further lifting of restrictions by the Fall (starting in September 2021).
One of these targets is to get 75% of those eligible in Canada fully Covid-19 vaccinated with a 1-dose or 2-dose vaccination series against Covid-19. At current daily vaccination rates, with over 65% of people 12 years old or more already vaccinated, and given that Canada has already started administering second doses, the goal is very achievable. As shown in the image below, once this milestone is reached, current plans call to allow in-door Post-Secondary classes, sports and family gatherings by the Fall.
